India is home to the largest number of undernourished people in the world (24% of the world’s undernourished population), alongwith prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies. Together, these increase the burden of disease and poor health, resulting in estimated loss of more than $12 billion annually in GDP. It faces the triple burden of malnutrition – undernutrition, over-nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. Contributing factors range from poor infrastructure, unbalanced dietary choices, flawed food distribution systems, lack of water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) facilities and extreme weather events impacting harvests. In this context, FOLU India is working towards engaging various public and private sector stakeholders to collaboratively enable a shift towards healthier diets. By bridging the nutritional gaps that have emerged in both rural and urban diets through the empowerment of sustainable food production and consumption.
