Overview

FOLU India core partner TERI is developing pathways for implementing crop diversification in Punjab towards improving the agricultural production system in the state. This would enable a shift in sustainable and regenerative agriculture practices in the state, alongwith addressing one of the most critical issues, which is groundwater depletion. The programme aims to find avenues for the diversification of crop production in the state to augment the use of groundwater for sustainable development. Key objectives of the project are as follows –

  • Identify the enabling conditions required to make alternative crops economically lucrative to the farmers
  • Understanding the dynamics of crop diversification in Punjab as shaped by its political economy; the role and nature of the state, coupled with the trade and market mechanisms for the transformation of the production structure

Through field consultations with farmers, Farmer Producer Organisations and other relevant stakeholders, the project is conducting a value-chain based gap analysis that will inform the crop diversification policy of the state.
